Starting a different streak?
After ending a 15-game skid last week, can Hersey start a run in the other direction when it visits Buffalo Grove? Even though the Huskies are still young, they believe they can do some more damage right now.
"I think we have a shot this year to make some noise and be competitive," said Hersey coach Mark Gunther, who received a congratulatory e-mail from former head coach Bruce Glover.
That was the expectation coming into this season with a lot of experience and a lot more depth. But the schedule didn't help in the win column as it faced Fremd, Schaumburg and Palatine in its MSL crossovers.
It did help in preparation as the Huskies' 30-28 loss to Schaumburg looks a lot better considering its successful start.
"We've seen little signs all along, even in the summer," Gunther said. "These guys love to work and love to compete and love the game.
"They gained a whole bunch of confidence playing Schaumburg and competing the way they did. We were right there and the schedule we played wasn't easy.
"It delayed our gratification and made us learn some lessons a little faster."
Quarterback Steve Nelson is getting help from running backs Chris Polinski and Dominic Biagini. The defense is making strides as LB Richard Kostuchowski had a monster game last week.
So can the Huskies go from worst to first? It's a pretty even division this year ...
"We saw what we can do," Gunther said. "Now it's just a matter of replicating it."
