Roskam gives democracy lesson to third-graders:

GOP Chief Deputy Whip Peter Roskam, these days, is often seen at the leadership table, at the side of Majority Leader Eric Cantor and House Speaker John Boehner during press conferences and House meetings. But, the Wheaton Republican found himself before a different audience during a trip home to the 6th Congressional District Tuesday, giving a "democracy lesson" to third graders at Emerson Elementary school in Wheaton.

Roskam, a father of four, put the group through an exercise of voting for legislation - weighing the pro's and cons before sending it on to committee, to the House floor for a debate, and then on to the Senate and the president's desk.

He made the group promise to learn a "secret" word - the coolest thing about Washington and the lawmaking process - "veto."

The room buzzed with the word as one student shot her hand up, asking Roskam why he wanted them to keep it quiet.

"Well, I'm a dad," Roskam said matter-of-factly. "I know that if I tell you not to talk about something, you'll remember it for the rest of your lives."

Here's a video clip we shot. Take a look.
