Rick Malnati's name has been frequently brought up for a variety of basketball coaching jobs since he stepped aside a few years ago after a highly successful tenure at New Trier. Now, Malnati is back on the sidelines after he was named as an assistant men's coach at Loyola University for second-year head coach Porter Moser. Malnati was a special assistant/advisor to the head coach last year for Moser as he helped assist with film breakdown, practice planning and scouting. “Rick has a tremendousknowledge of and feel for the game of basketball,” Moser said in a release from Loyoa. “When he was at New Trier High School, Rick was one of the most well-respected and successfulcoaches in the state. He is an Illinois guy through and through and is a tremendous asset to our program.” Malnati was as New Trier for 12 seasons and his 2002 team finished 26-5 and fourth in the Class AA state tournament after upsetting Proviso East and future pros Shannon Brown and Dee Brown in a supersectional. His 2000 team led by Matt Lottich made the Elite Eight in Peoria after a tense 1-point win over Schaumburg in the Fremd AA sectional final. The Trevians won eight regional and three sectional titles during Malnati's tenure. Malnati was a standout player at New Trier West and played at Bradley.
