The Class A Peoria Chiefs sent out a release this morning saying shortstop Javier Baez has been promoted to high-A Daytona. Baez, the Cubs' first-round draft choice (ninth overall) last year, hit his 12th homer of the season last night for the Chiefs, going 2-for-4. In 57 games for Peoria, the 19-year-old Baez had a line of .333/.383/.596 for an OPS of .979. In addition to the 12 homers, he had 33 RBI, 9 walks and 48 strikeouts in 213 at-bats. He committed 15 errors. The Cubs kept Baez in Arizona until Memorial Day, when he joined Peoria. They wanted to keep him in a more controlled environment until moving him to the Midwest League, where the weather is often bad in the first two months of the season. The Cubs on Friday named Baez their minor-league player of the month.
