Bad news for Wheaton American Legion baseball team

Wheaton American Legion baseball coach Jerry Miller was looking forward to an early-morning bus ride Wednesday that would take his team, the Illinois state runnerup, to the Great Lakes Regional tournament in Midland, Mich., which starts Thursday. Unfortunately for Wheaton, the team will not be taking the trip because it does not have enough players to participate, per American Legion rules. A combination of players who had conflicts with Wednesday's start of high school football practice, work and family commitments left Wheaton with only 11 players who could make the trip. Legion rules require a minimum of 12 and a maximum of 18 so Wheaton learned late Tuesday afternoon it had to forfeit its spot in the eight-team regional. "I feel bad for the kids who want to go and for the Legion (Post 76) because they were so excited we get to go," Miller said. "I liked our chances in the tourney." Wheaton had 14 players at the state tourney and Miller thought he would have enough to meet the tournament roster requirements but other situations arose with players who were unable to make the trip. Miller said efforts to get Danville, the state's third-place finisher, and the other teams which participated in the Illinois state tourney to take Wheaton's spot were also unsuccessful because those teams also didn't have enough available players. Wheaton was supposed to play host Midland on Thursday - that game and what would have been its second tournament game will now be forfeits. Illinois state champ Moline opens with Michigan state champion Adrian at 4 p.m. Central time Thursday.
