Duckworth named convention speaker
Democrat Tammy Duckworth has been named a speaker at the party's convention in Charlotte in the first week of September.
Convention officials announced the Hoffman Estates candidate for Congress as a speaker as part of a slate of nine other women who will also have time at the podium.
Democrats have tried to hit the GOP on women's issues on recent days and weeks as the scandal surrounding Missouri Republican Todd Akin has brewed.
Duckworth's campaign manager said she doesn't yet know which day Duckworth will speak.
Duckworth's Republican opponent in the 8th Congressional District, U.S. Rep. Joe Walsh, criticized her for spending time in Charlotte. He's decided to skip the Republican convention in Tampa next week.
"“Not as a candidate or as a Congressman have I ever been one of the political class," Walsh said in a statement. "I came to Washington to serve the people of my district and reclaim our country from the growth of government. Rather than mingle with Party insiders in Tampa, I will be in the 8th district to continue to serve as an independent voice for the people."
