Danks...and food for thought
GLENDALE, Ariz. - It's easy to get caught up with injuries in spring training, especially as the regular season closes in.
Yesterday, we told you all about John Danks' miserable Cactus League outing against the Reds - the left-hander allowed 10 runs on 11 hits in 3.1 innings.
Clearly, Danks does not look ready to break camp with the Sox.
We'll try not to rehash too much, but just over seven months off shoulder surgery, Danks almost accepts the fact he'll have to get back up to speed pitching for Class AAA Charlotte in April.
"It is not about me," Danks said today. "This is a team game and obviously we are here to win ballgames no matter who is doing it. I would like to be there, but I will certainly understand if they want me to wait a little bit and someone else is throwing better a little bit in April."
Look for Hector Santiago to fill in until Danks is ready. Dylan Axelrod, who is scheduled to pitch relief today vs. the Diamondbacks, is another option, but look for the right-hander to be the Sox' long reliever while Danks is out.
It's not an ideal situation for the White Sox, but they're fortunate to have some pitching depth, and Santiago showed what he can do last September while going 2-0 with a 1.86 ERA in 4 starts.
-The White Sox Wednesday announced an expanded menu at U.S. Cellular Field this season.
Here's the list:
