NBA free-agent update: Bulls bargain shopping

The NBA free-agent season is winding down. The Bulls can offer only the minimum salary, but have interest in adding another big man. Marcus Camby, who turns 40 in March, and former Spurs offensive rebound specialist DeJuan Blair are a couple of possibilities. The Bulls probably figure Malcolm Thomas can be added later if needed.

It seems less likely the Bulls will add a guard. Andrew Goudelock, a star in four of the five summer league games, decided to grab a guaranteed deal this week with BC Unics in Russia.

The latest buzz around the league has ex-Spurs sharpshooter Gary Neal likely to land in Milwaukee, while the Pacers added veteran big man Luis Scola from Phoenix in a trade for Gerald Green, Miles Plumlee and a protected first-round pick.

Indiana has shown what’s possible when a team is not restricted by being above the luxury-tax threshold. The Pacers will need to give Paul George a big extension, but will also likely part with Danny Granger soon, so it should all work out. Look for the Bulls to amnesty Carlos Boozer and try some similar depth-building maneuvers next summer.

There are still two lonely restricted free agents on the market – Milwaukee’s Brandon Jennings and Minnesota’s Nikola Pekovic. It’s probably just a matter of time before Pekovic agrees to a deal, but it’s anyone’s guess what the Bucks do with Jennings. They tried replacing him with Atlanta’s Jeff Teague, but a tepid offer sheet was matched. These guys can always take the one-year qualifying offer and become unrestricted next year. It worked for Ben Gordon.

A few interesting names still on the market – Mo Williams, LeBron’s old running mate in Cleveland; Lamar Odom, ex-Bull Tyrus Thomas (amnestied in Charlotte), ex-Bull Ronnie Brewer, ex-Bull James Johnson, Corey Maggette, Antawn Jamison, Beno Udrih (bad point guard, but good shooter).

With Mike Miller choosing to join Memphis, maybe Rip Hamilton has a shot in Oklahoma City. Former Portland center Greg Oden is expected to choose between the Heat, Pelicans, Mavs, Kings, Hawks and maybe a couple more for his comeback.

Here’s the updated list of reported signings. Most are now official.
