Viciedo adjusting to part-time role
It's about 30 degrees colder today than it was for Monday's White Sox-Twins season opener, but the rain is expected to hold off until later so there will be baseball this afternoon on the South Side.
Some pregame notes:
-With right-hander Kevin Correia on the mound for Minnesota today, left-handed hitting Alejandro De Aza is back in left field for the second straight game and right-handed hitting Dayan Viciedo is back on the bench.
If this is going to be a platoon situation, De Aza is going to get the majority of the starts. Last season, the Sox played 124 games against right-handed starters and just 38 vs. left-handers.
Viciedo is taking his new role in stride, for now.
"Yes, that's what every player wants," he said through an interpreter. "I want to play every day. But right now, you have to deal with what you have. You have to stay sharp so when you get a chance to play, then you are able to do that and be able to help the team."
De Aza hit 2 home runs in Monday's 5-3 win in the season opener. As long as he is producing, De Aza is going to stay in the lineup.
-Speaking of lineups, the White Sox have a different look today.
Conor Gillaspie is sick, so Marcus Semien moves from second base to third. Leury Garcia gets the start at second base.
"I think the versatility of Marcus and Leury, you can fill that spot without feeling vulnerable and exposed," manager Robin Ventura said.
-From the day Addison Reed was traded to the Diamondbacks for third baseman of the future Matt Davidson, Nate Jones was expected to move into the closer role for the Sox.
An official decision never confirmed the speculation, and Matt Lindstrom was finally named closer before Monday's opener. Jones is fine staying in his customary setup role.
"The only thing that matters to me is I'm still on the team, still in the bullpen," he said. "It's just now our job is to get the ball to Matt with the lead for the ninth, so nothing's changed. I'm still excited, still ready to rock and roll, get the season going."
