Report: Pistons closing in on Stan Van Gundy
Stan Van Gundy is best known as the older brother of former Knicks coach and current TV analyst Jeff Van Gundy. But Stan might be the most underrated coaching free agents available.
Stan Van Gundy has been a head coach for seven full seasons. He's never finished with a losing record, his teams have not missed the playoffs and in five of those years, he advanced to the second round.
He was fired by Miami 21 games into the 2005-06 season and the Heat went on to win the NBA title. Van Gundy did reach the finals with Orlando in 2010, losing to the L.A. Lakers in six games.
Reports from yahoo.com and other sources suggest Van Gundy shied away from interest in coaching Golden State in order to be in charge of all basketball operations for Detroit. The Pistons have some talent on the roster, especially with big men Andre Drummond and Greg Monroe, but need to settle a messy team chemistry. The team's two big additions last year, PG Brandon Jennings and SF Josh Smith, were both failures. So a trade is probably in order.
In other coaching news, Golden State is said to be taking another shot at Steve Kerr, who has been slow in coming to an agreement to coach the Knicks.
Cleveland is another Central Division team in need of a coach after firing Mike Brown on Monday. The Cavs probably have little chance of keeping Luol Deng and will be desperate to sign Kyirie Irving to an extension this summer.
