A midweek college quote sampler

Hey gang:

If you've missed these quotes this week, you've missed a lot. Or, you've missed something. Or maybe not.

But first, let's open with my favorite quote from the preseason. This was how Hall of Fame center Jack Rudnay, who starred at Northwestern from 1966-68 before dominating for the Kansas City Chiefs, closed his speech to the Wildcats prior to their first practice on Aug. 5:
"God bless you. Rip their livers out."

--In that vein, here's Illinois coach Ron Zook's blunt assessment of last year's game between the Illini and Wisconsin that Illinois won 31-26:
"Both teams just lined up and knocked the crap out of each other."

--Here's supersmart NU wide receiver Eric Peterman doing his utmost to live up to the Wildcats' mantra of "flushing it" and starting each week anew. Remember, Northwestern is 6-1 and all but wraps up its first bowl berth since 2005 if it wins Saturday at Indiana:
"I don't even know how many games we've won right now. We're just 0-0, trying to get to 1-0 this week. Beat Indiana."
And when asked about the Wildcats being No. 22 in the first BCS standings:
"I don't know if you heard or not, but we were the first 0-0 team to make the BCS Top 25. So we're proud of that."

--Northwestern basketball coach Bill Carmody on John Shurna, the freshman forward from Glenbard West:
"About 6-foot-8. Runs. He's got, what do they say, a good motor. He's like that guy (Joakim) Noah, (but) not as crazy. But he runs around and he's good. He can shoot the ball, he's tough around the basket. I think he's going to help us right away."
