Are Bulls interested in acquiring Afflalo?
The Bulls are interested in trading for Orlando shooting guard Arron Afflalo, according to a report by yahoo.com.
This isn't surprising news or anything. The Bulls are clearly in the market for a scoring two guard and Afflalo figures to be available with Orlando in rebuilding mode.
The Magic was widely expected to draft Australian guard Dante Exum this week to pair in thre backcourt with second-year guad Victor Oladipo. But the foot injury to projected No. 1 pick Joel Embiid might scramble the early picks of the draft, with Exum now projected to go third to Philadelphia.
Afflalo, 29, has made steady improvement during his seven years in the NBA. Last season, he averaged a career-high 18.2 points while shooting .459 overall and .427 from 3-point range. He worked out for the Bulls when coming out of UCLA years ago.
Afflalo is reasonably priced. He's set to make $7.56 million the next two seasons, with a player option worth $7.75 million for 2015-16.
Here's the problem, though. If the Bulls are clearing cap space to make a run at Carmelo Anthony, Afflalo's salary doesn't fit. Most likely, Afflalo is an option if the Bulls don't land Anthony this summer. The Bulls could offer one of their two first-round picks or maybe a future selection.
If Anthony does join the Bulls, they'd probably stick with Jimmy Butler at the two guard, since he'd take on the most challenging defensive matchup and wouldn't need to score much playing between Anthony and Derrick Rose.
LOVE TRADE IN LIMBO?
Another story out Saturday morning by espn.com says talks between Golden State and Minnesota for Kevin Love and bogged down.
The swap would reportedly include Golden State's Klay Thompson and David Lee for Love and Kevin Martin. The other pieces still need to be worked out.
I've written plenty about why Love isn't high on the Bulls priority list right now. Minnesota could take its time and wait until the February trade deadline before dealing Love, who can become a free agent next summer.
So it wouldn't be a surprise if the Timberwolves don't make a move before the draft. They're in a spot where they can try to get exactly what they want for Love, otherwise they can just wait.
