John and Marlena were FIRED?!

John and Marlena were FIRED?!

I haven't watched "Days of Our Lives" regularly in more than a decade. I'm lucky if I catch one or two episodes per year, if that. However, I was kind of obsessed with it as a pre-teen. I taped the show every day and would rush home from school to watch it. I continued watching throughout high school and occasionally tuned in during my college years.

John Black and Marlena Evans (played by Drake Hogestyn and Deidre Hall) have always been my favorite soap opera couple, hands-down. They shared some of the best storylines in daytime television history. Who can forget their reunion on the pier after Marlena came back from the dead for the fifteenth time, or when John and Marlena came face to face with the "real" Roman Brady in the middle of the jungle? Remember the "Marlena in the pit" storyline, and the steamy John/Marlena affair? (Those sex scenes on the airplane and on the Titan conference room table were super hot!) Then there was my all-time favorite storyline, when Marlena was possessed by the devil! CLASSIC! (SoapNet rebroadcast some of those episodes last Halloween. It was awesome!)

Anyway, my understanding is that "Days of Our Lives" has really gone downhill in recent years. I rarely ever watch it, but I do read the online updates pretty regularly to keep up with my favorite characters, and I will always have a soft spot for the show in my heart.

Rumors have been flying around for the past couple of years that "Days" was on the verge of being canceled. Apparently NBC opted to renew it for another 18 months, but only if the show could function with severe budget cuts. Guess which two actors were among the first to get the axe? Deidre and Drake! Marlena and John! NOOOO!!!!

I am so freakin' angry! Yes, I'm sure Deidre and Drake have the most inflated salaries on the show, but how could they be fired?! John and Marlena are the center of Salem! They are the number one supercouple of all time! Firing John and Marlena would be like firing Bill Cosby from "The Cosby Show." You just cannot have the show without them!

I am so pissed off. At this rate, I hope "Days" does end up being canceled. The producers are making some really stupid decisions, and they all deserve to be out of a job!

THE SPONSORS

I STILL WATCH DAZE AND I MEAN IT DAZE- WHY HAVENT JOHN AND MARLENA COMMENTED ON THEIR DISMISSAL? I WATCH BUT I'VE BEEN TAKING NOTES. I WILL NO LONGER BUY PRODUCTS BY THE SPONSORS OF DAZE - IT'S THEIR DECISION SO DONT GO BLAMING ANYONE ELSE. J AND M AND BO AND HOPE AND ALICE MADE THE SHOW. NO ONE CARES ABOUT THE NEW COMERS WHO BY THE BY ARE GETTING PAID P=NUTS! AND THE STORY LINES ICK! SHAME ON NBC, THE SPONSORS AND THE BIG MUCKY MUCKS WHO STILL GET THE BIG BUCKS! HEAR ME NOW U ARE MAKING A BIG MISTAKE. AND REALLY CAN'T WE BE UPDATED ON FRANCIS REID AND HER HEALTH - I FOR ONE WISH HER WELL AND MISS HER. IVE BEEN WATCHIN SINCE DAY ONE AND MAN O MAN YOU RUNNERS OF TV DONT HAVE A CLUE WHAT U HAVE DONE! SHAME ON YOU. KAREN KINSES

I agree...

...the writing sucks. That's why I only watch about two episodes per year, and have done so for the past 10 years or so. It's sad. NBC should seriously hire me to write for that show. Heck, 10-year-olds could probably come up with better storylines than what we have now.

I've read about Kate's cancer storyline. A lot of people say it's ridiculous because she's all dolled up in heavy ballroom makeup when she's supposed to be on her hospital deathbed. WTF?

Wrong ones getting fired

The problem isn't the inflated salaries, the problem is the writering! The only semi-realistic storyline is Kate's cancer and even that has gone as quickly as it came. They storylines are predictable and lame. Their imagination lacks in substance! I predict that Nicole will end up with Sami's baby - how predictable is that. Whatever happenned to the waitress (played by Diedre's real sister) that storyline started but never ended - it's an insult to viewers to think that we wouldn't notice that. Hellllooo what about Alice - she gone into hiding? Thought we didn't notice? NBC is making a mistake axing John and Marlene but a bigger mistake keeping the writers.

John and Marlena

Enjoyed this blog. Sounds similar to my experience. I used to love the show. In recent years, the writing has been poor and the characters like John and Marlena haven't been on as much, so I kept up with their stories but only watched sporadically.

At the beginning of this year, I actually got involved with the J&M story, but in May it seemed like the writers lost their minds. All of the stories stopped making any sense. None of the characters were recognizable. J&M disappeared altogether so I stopped watching till last week when the J&M story finally took off again. Just when it seemed they were on track with the story, they fire J&M. In a way, the show is so bad it's almost a relief, but I have a soft spot for it too. It's the only holdover I had from my younger days. With J&M gone, the last tie to the show is gone for me. The family feeling is gone. Very sad. The end of an era.

It is sad!

I actually hope the show finally folds. You cannot have "DOOL" without J&M!
